‘In a corner’ हा शब्दसमूह अभ्यासा. ह्या शब्दसमूहाने अर्थ निर्माण होतो; परंतु पूर्ण अर्थबोध होत नाही.

असा शब्दसमूह ज्याने अर्थ निर्माण होतो, पण पूर्ण अर्थबोध होत नाही त्याला वाक्यांश (Phrase) असे म्हणतात.

खालील वाक्यांमधील तिरकया अक्षरातील शब्दसमूह वाक्यांश आहेत.

The su rises in the east.

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.

There came a giant to my door.

It was a sunset of great beauty.

The top (of the mountains) were covered with snow.

खालील वाक्यांमधील तिरकया अक्षरातील शब्दसमूह नीट वाचा.

He has a chain of gold.

He has a chain which is made of gold.

पहिल्या शब्दसमूहाला वाक्यांश म्हणतात.

दुसर्‍या शब्दसमूहात ‘of gold’ या वाक्यांशाव्यतिरिक्त उद्देश्य (which) आणि विशेय (is made of gold) यांचा समावेश आहे.

अशा प्रकारचा शब्दसमूह जो वाक्याचा एक भाग असतो व ज्यामध्ये उद्देश्य व विधेय समाविष्ट असते, त्याला उपवाक्य (clause) असे म्हणतात.
