 Tense and Types of Tense

What is time: As the action is understood from the verb given in the sentence, also the time at which that action is taking place is also understood.


There are 3 main types of time and they are as follows


Present tense

the future

When the form of the verb indicates that the action is happening now, the tense is 'present tense'.


Example


She sings a song.


we study


I eat mango.


I play cricket.


4 subtypes of present tense occur.

simple present tense


When an action takes place in the present tense, it is called 'simple present'.


Example


 


I eat mango.


Krishna plays cricket.


Priya drinks tea.

Present Imperfect Tense / Present Continuous Tense


When an action is in the present tense and is incomplete or continuous, the present tense is called 'imperfect or continuous present'.


Example


Anand is writing a letter.


Pooja is studying.


We are having lunch.

perfect present tense


When an action is in the present tense and has just been completed, it is called 'Present Perfect'.


Example


I have eaten mango.


We have solved the paper.


Students have studied.

  Current perfect present tense


If an action is shown to be continuously happening in the present tense, it is called 'Present Tense'.


Example


I go for a walk every day.


Pradeep exercises daily.


Krishna studies everyday.

When the verb form indicates that the action has already happened. When such a realization occurs, that time is called 'past'


Example


Ram went to school.


I studied.


She ate.


There are 4 subtypes of past tense.

simple past


An action that has happened in the past and when spoken of in that context is called 'simple past'.


Example


Ram studied


I read the book.


Sita plays first.

Imperfect/Continuous Past


An action was in progress or was happening in the past i.e. the state of the action when the action was incomplete at that time

It is called 'Past Imperfect/Past Continuous'.


Example


I was eating mango.


Deepak was singing.


She was riding a bicycle.

past perfect


When an action is completed in the past or when the action is predicted to have finished completely, it is called 'past perfect'.


Example


Siddhi had sung the song.


I had studied.


He had written the paper.


Ram had gone to the forest.

  Present perfect past


An action in the past has been continuously happening and that action has also been completed. Such tenses are called 'past continuous' or

It is called 'reeti past'.


Example


I used to exercise every day.


She used to go to the temple every day.


Prasad was going to school regularly.

When the verb form indicates that an action is going to happen in the future, that time is called 'future tense'.


Example


I will go to the cinema.


I will become a teacher.


I will come to you.

Simple Future Tense –


The 'simple future' is when an action is understood to be about to happen in the future.


Example


It will rain.


Udha exam will be over.


I will go to the cinema.

Imperfect / Future Continuous Tense


When an action is in progress or has not been completed in the future

It is called 'imperfect future tense'.


Example


I will be eating mango.


I will be going to the village.


Will be studying earlier.


Dipti will be singing.

perfect future tense


When an action is in the future tense and is realized to be complete, it is called 'perfect future tense'.



Example


I must have eaten the mango.


I must have gone to the village.


Have studied before.


Dipti must have sung a song.

  Present Perfect Future Tense -


When an action always takes place in the future, it is called 'Riti/Continuous Future Tense'.


Example


I will exercise everyday.


Earlier he will study everyday.


Sunil will go to school regularly.
